Unlike
smaller terriers, it is not suited to searching the
lairs of small animals, but it is good at hunting otter
in the marsh and at stag and wild-boar hunting. In time
of war it has distinguished itself as a carrier of messages,
a sentry, in sounding alarm, in assault and as a mouser.
It has been trained as a police dog and a bodyguard.
Today, however, perhaps mistakenly, it is considered
only as an excellent companion dog
