PERSONALITY
:
|
|
Until
the 19th Century, the bulldog was used as a gladiator.
It was aggressive, ferocious and blood thirsty, so much
that the Roman promulgated a decree that forbade taking
a bulldog through the streets, even if held on a chain.
Breeding over the last hundred years, while maintaining
the bulldog's menacing look, has made of it a good-natured,
reserved, dignified, loyal, domesticated dog, clean
and aristocratic, "beautiful in its ugliness"

USES
:
|
|
At
the end of its career as a gladiator, it was used as
a guard dog, a police dog, and an auxiliary in the army.
In the US, one bulldog was even given five ribbon and
a Bronze Star for its war work and another was promoted
to corporal. Today, the bulldog is esteemed as a companion
dog.
