It
is fundamentally kindly and sensitive; but at the same
time, it is stubborn and indolent. It has a fairly developed
sense of protectiveness for its master, especially for
children. It is aristocratic, intelligent, loyal and
not aggressive, though it tends to be suspicious of
people it does not like. The collie must be trained
with sensitivity and gentle persuasion. Otherwise it
will refuse to learn even the simplest thingThe collie
is a robust, vigorous, active dog and is still used
as a sheepdog. Due to its intelligence, however, it
is also known as a guard dog, a rescue dog and guide
dog for blind children. Because of its beauty it has
become primarily a companion dog. Frequent brushing
is required to maintain the beauty of its coat. The
collie should be bathed occasionally. In summer it suffers
from the heat and should always have access to a shady
spot.
